Australian pharma field roles · 2023–2026
Design or drift?
classified
Australian pharma field roles are getting broader. The question is whether that capability is being designed deliberately, or accumulating vacancy by vacancy.
1,437 Australian field sales and field medical ads, published from 2023 to 2026 and classified against 61 capabilities.
Field roles are changing. Recruitment specifications are one of the mechanisms through which companies build those future capabilities. If those specifications evolve deliberately, the organisation is designing its field model. If they change vacancy by vacancy, capability can drift.
The market is asking more from its field teams
Across the market, both sales and field medical roles now specify more capabilities than they did earlier in the dataset. Sales has moved from 6.7 to 7.9 capabilities per ad, field medical from 8.8 to 10.3. Individual companies move in both directions, so the important signal is not any one company’s position. It is the direction of the market.
Each point is one team. Vertical is capabilities specified in the most recent year, horizontal is the change since that team’s first year. Hover for ad counts.
I have spent nineteen years working inside these commercial and medical models, which is what made this pattern interesting to me.
The capability mix is changing, not simply expanding
Influencing is among the most frequently added capabilities in field sales, while traditional selling skills are the one capability no team added and three dropped. Territory planning is also rising.
Clinical data interpretation rises further across both functions than any other capability.
In field medical, cross-functional collaboration is the most frequently added capability, while autonomy is the most frequently dropped.
The implication is not that field teams are being asked to do less. They are increasingly being asked to operate differently.

Capability gets built one hire at a time
A job description is a small but repeated organisational design decision. Candidates prepare against it, recruiters screen against it, and managers eventually hire against it.
Over several hiring cycles, those decisions accumulate.
If role specifications are anchored to a deliberate view of what the field model needs to become, recruitment helps build that model. If each vacancy is rewritten in isolation, capability can drift.

Sources and method
This is original analysis, so there is no public page to cite.
What was counted. 4,307 job ads were pulled from 23 Australian pharmaceutical affiliates covering January 2023 to August 2026. Of those, 3,046 carried a requirements section detailed enough to classify, and 1,437 were field sales or field medical roles. Those 1,437 are the ads behind every figure here. Each was classified against 61 capabilities in 11 groups, and a capability counts wherever the ad states it, whether under requirements, responsibilities or the role summary. Teams with fewer than ten classified ads are excluded from the charts.
How accurate it is. Classification was checked by hand against a random sample of 80 capability mentions: 74% precise on the exact capability, 95% once adjacent capabilities in the same family are allowed. Role classification runs from a fixed, tested definition that counts a Patient Journey Partner and a Territory Manager as the same kind of role.
What it cannot show. These are advertised roles from one index. Roles filled internally or through search never appear. Ad volume per team runs from ten to over three hundred, so some positions carry far more weight than others, which is why the counts sit on every hover. It describes what companies published, not what they intended or who they hired.
One control worth stating. Where the page compares how alike a company’s sales and medical profiles are, that comparison is tested against a breadth-matched null. Profiles mechanically look more similar as roles acquire more capabilities, so only moves that exceed what breadth growth alone produces are reported as convergence or divergence.
The underlying data is available on request and the argument should be checked against it.
